「世界ではTwitterやFacebookなどソーシャルメディアは政治にも影響が強く、中東のように独裁政権が倒されたり、ウォール街でデモが起こったりしているが、日本ではあまり影響力が感じられない」という田原氏の問いかけに対し、佐々木氏は「これらの出来事は必ずしもソーシャルメディアがあったから起こったのではない。あくまでツールとして使われたにすぎず、政府に強い不満をもった若者の数が多かったのが原因」と指摘。田原氏も「ロシア帝政が倒されたときはツールとして張り紙が使われた」と同意した。
